Preventing MySpace idiots to steal your precious bandwidth

Just today, i have noticed that my bandwidth usage surge up 2 times it normally does. A trouble of having your site suspended and having to pay for the extra bandwidth the other people are stealing (mostly Myspace users).

To end this horror, i have decided to edit my .htaccess file and prevent all websites to hotlink on the images i have uploaded to my server. Yes, i have marked them private, any referrer other than my domain name will be denied access to my site’s images including Google and the other search engines.

So here is code for preventing people from hotlinking my images:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://tildemark.com/.*$ [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://www.tildemark.com/.*$ [NC]
ReWriteRule .*\.(png|gif|jpg)$ - [N,F,L]

Hi! you replied to my request on Twitter yesterday, asking for TP/MT bloggers, but did not get an email from you.
I am writing a blogpost for non-profit organisations, helping them to select a blog platform. However, I do not know MT/TP. Wonder if you would want to screen the draft and fill in the holes on TP/MT before I publish?
Due credit will be given with a linkback of course ;-)

Great article, I’ll share with my readers at my Computer Help Site.
I had to do the same with my htaccess. I had no idea that was happening.

  4. I hate it when they do that, just yesterday I was wondering if there was away to do this.
    Thanks a bunch,

  5. I knew there was a way to avoid allowing people to hotlink your images, although I didn’t know myspace people would be the ones causing bandwidth issues. I’ll have to check mine now, to see if I am getting the same thing. Thanks for the post.

Yeah Bandwidth is a costly one, so we must save it. This code is good for that.

  9. For me, myspace is always bloated. Whenever my friend tells me to visit her myspace page, I decline it lol. It’s for no reason so bloated and takes alot out of my memory. How much bandwidth you’ve? Isn’t there a better idea? To put up the images on image hosting?

  10. acne says:

Yes I agree with you.If your page is suspended due to bandwidth. It is very irritating. But it is too costly to increase your connection bandwidth. If your code would help then it is a good job.

  36. The code to prevent my bandwidth from being stolen by MySpace users is very useful. But are you sure MySpace users are the ones responsible for this? How did they do this?

Its liitle coding secrets like this that make all of the difference. If you are paying to host a site like Woodwork Books the last theing you want is people stealing your bandwidth.

  43. Good to know. Bandwidth isn’t free, but the kids using Myspace don’t know that.. or they just don’t care.

  44. I had this problem a few months ago with one of my sites – I was getting so much “traffic” because of a video I had put up, that my hosting account got suspended for a day or so and I had to deal with getting it reactivated, and had to pay extra for bandwidth that month. Grr..

  45. How did you now that it was MySpace users stealing your bandwidth? Is there a way to prevent this from happening to me?

  46. Janet says:

    Wow! That’s a great point.
I’m new at blogging. Though I have heard that one of the reasons that people get upset about “stealing” photo links was due to the bandwidth.
I didn’t know how to put in a code to prevent that from happening.
I don’t care if someone uses one of my photos, as long as they download it first. If I’m not paying anything extra, I’m not going to chase anyone down.
i.e. help yourself if you want to DOWNLOAD a photo and upload it to your own web site. :)

  47. kindle dx says:

I was wondering what was causeing the surge in bandwidth. I’m going to try using the code. thx
